چکیده

The existence of nanosized particles at the workplace is not a new phenomenon . As early as in 1997, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Commission for the investigation of Health Hazards of chemical compounds in the work area, defined the term “ultrafine particles” in its List of Maximale ArbeitsplatzKonzentration (MAK) and Biologischer Arbeitsstoff-Toleranzwert (BAT) Values . The definition of “ultrafine particles” as it relates to the workplace corresponds primarily to the term nanoparticles as it is currently being used in research and technology . Nanoparticles are not a new discovery of science, nor are they an innovation, as regards their definition based on their particle size or as a technical achievement. They have, however, always been components of smoke. Their use as natural iron oxide and carbon black particles has already been applied in prehistoric cave paintings, such as in Altamira, etc. Nanosized particles differ from coarser particles by their increasing tendency to form agglomerates . Such agglomerates are macroscopically perceived as one particle and may break down into their primary particles in biological material; this dissociation is of toxicological relevance (Oberdörster et al. 2005).

Self-consistent Growth of Decimeter-size Dust Agglomerates and Beyond

Introduction: It is widely accepted that collisions between dust agglomerates lead to growth of larger bodies in the early Solar System. Collision parameters change with evolving time and depend on the model for the Solar Nebula. For the first growth phase from µm to cm size (v << 1 m/s) the growth process is well understood [1]. Eventually, collision velocities reach values of up to 60 m/s. We...

Primary Particle Size Distribution Measurement of Nanomaterials by Using TEM

Industrial applications of nano-particles are reported in many fields recently. Regulation of nano-materials is also discussed in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). European Union (EU) announced the definition of nano-material in 2012. According to EU definition, nanomaterial means a natural, incidental or manufactured material containing particles, in an unbound sta...

Quantitative characterization of agglomerates and aggregates of pyrogenic and precipitated amorphous silica nanomaterials by transmission electron microscopy

BACKGROUND The interaction of a nanomaterial (NM) with a biological system depends not only on the size of its primary particles but also on the size, shape and surface topology of its aggregates and agglomerates. A method based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM), to visualize the NM and on image analysis, to measure detected features quantitatively, was assessed for its capacity to char...

Transport and Deposition of Welding Fume Agglomerates in a Realistic Human Nasal Airway.

Welding fume is a complex mixture containing ultra-fine particles in the nanometer range. Rather than being in the form of a singular sphere, due to the high particle concentration, welding fume particles agglomerate into long straight chains, branches, or other forms of compact shapes. Understanding the transport and deposition of these nano-agglomerates in human respiratory systems is of grea...

Simulation of the hydrodynamic drag of aggregated particles.

The drag force on aggregates and partially sintered agglomerates is assessed using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and accelerated Stokesian dynamics (ASD). Both methods have been compared in terms of accuracy and computational effort. It is shown that they give comparable results if all numerical parameters are controlled carefully. LBM requires a much higher computational effort, however, ...
